Govt initiates National Human Rights Action Plan

(Mylbsonline.com/Liberia/Dec. 12/2013)The Liberian Government, through the Independent National Human Rights Commission, has launched a 5-year National Human Rights Action Plan.

The Plan was launched Tuesday, December 10, 2013 in Monrovia.

According to Deputy Justice Minister for Administration and Public Safety, Wheatonia Barnes, the National Human Rights Action Plan is a policy that will help realize the advancement of human rights in Liberia.

Cllr. Barnes said: “The document is also aimed at promoting and protecting human rights by identifying human rights issues, including the rights of children, women and other vulnerable people.”

Also speaking, the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Human Rights Commission, Gladys Johnson, vowed to fight child trafficking and child labor in Liberia.

Cllr. Johnson said: “The Commission’s focus is to ensure that the rights of children are not abused by using them as bread winners in the streets.”

At the same time, European Union (EU) Ambassador to Liberia, Attilio Pacifici, expressed the EU’s support to the Liberian Government and to the Independent Human Rights Commission in implementing all human rights charters in the country.
