( The European Union (EU) Head of Delegation to Liberia says human rights and democracy remain at the center of EU’s engagement with the country.

Ambassador Attilio Pacifici said: “Given such attention to human rights and democracy, the EU would continue promoting and supporting initiatives geared toward advancing human freedom.

Mr. Pacifici further noted: “With the bilateral partnerships with countries around the world, including Liberia, it is committed to placing human rights and democracy at the center of its interactions.”

He spoke recently at a human rights workshop for a group of Liberian musicians.

“The EU is committed to promoting its values of human rights and democracy around the world,” he added.

“At the center of the EU’s human rights policy, is a vibrant civil society that plays the indispensable role that empowers people to know and claim their rights,” the EU Envoy also noted.

The workshop, in collaboration with the EU Delegation to Liberia, was organized by Liberian Hip-Co Musicians.

The gathering was part of activities marking International Human Rights Day on Tuesday, December 10, 2013.

Ambassador Pacifici also mentioned that the EU’s human rights policy encompasses civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights.

It seeks to promote the rights of women, children, persons belonging to minorities, and displaced persons.

The EU Diplomat pledged the EU’s support to rights campaigners often targeted by oppressive regimes and perpetrators of crimes.
