UN SecretaryGeneral’s Special Representative to Liberia, Karin Landgren, said: “UNMIL’s mandate has been extended up to September 30, 2015.”

“The extension of the Mission’s mandate is due to the Ebola pandemic that has hard-hit the country and claimed hundreds of lives since March this year.”

According to the Liberia News Agency (LINA), Mr. Landgren made the disclosure Wednesday, October 1, 2014, during a press conference at UNMIL’s Headquarters in Monrovia.

Madam Landgren said: “Because of the Ebola crisis, the U.N. Security Council did not discuss UNMIL’s drawdown and security transition during its council meeting in September.”

It devoted discussions entirely on the rapid development related to the Ebola outbreak they termed as Liberia’s “gravest” threat since the end of the civil war, the U.N. official also said.

The release also quotes Madam Landgren as saying: “Discussion on UNMIL’s drawdown was suspended to focus discussion entirely on the destabilizing impact of the virus and the economic, social, political and security consequences already being felt.”

“Prices have risen, economic growth expected to be cut by more than half and trade reduced,” the U.N. Secretary General’s Special Representative to Liberia stressed.

“Many farmers are not tending their fields in affected areas, and children are not in school,” she also stressed.

Madam Landgren also noted that the Security Council adopted its resolution on UNMIL September 15, 2014, expressing grave concern about the extent of the Ebola Virus outbreak.

According to her, one of the messages reinforced by the Security Council is that “UNMIL is staying in Liberia, as the country battles to turn the tide of the Ebola infections.”

The U.N. official emphasized: “The UN mandate on Liberia has been rolled over until the end of 2014. This means UNMIL’s mandate was extended without any changes.”
