(elbcradio.com/Liberia/Oct. 28, 2014)-South Africa's Football Captain, Senzo Meyiwa, has died after being shot during a burglary whilst visiting his girlfriend’s house.

According to the BBC, the incident occurred Sunday night, October 26, 2014 around 20:00 (18:00 GMT) in Vosloorus, south of the South African Capital, Johannesburg.

The BBC quotes South African Police Service as saying Captain Meyiwa was reportedly attacked after men entered his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo’s house.

In a statement, the police said two men had entered the house and a third man remained outside. Upon entering the house, the criminals demanded mobile phones and other valuables, and all three later fled on foot after shots were fired.

Meyiwa may have been trying to defend Ms Khumalo when he was shot, the BBC also quoted the police as having said. The report further noted that the player was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital.

The 27-year-old was the goalkeeper for one of the country’s outstanding football clubs, Orlando Pirates. Meyiwa had played in South Africa's last four Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

He was in action Saturday, October 25, 2014 for his club, when they progressed to the semi-finals of the South African League Cup, beating Ajax Cape Town 4-1.

Relatives and fans gathered outside the hospital and Ms Khumalo's house to grieve over Meyiwa's death. South Africa's Football Coach, Ephraim Mashaba, paid tearful tribute to Captain Senzo Meyiwa.

The footballer’s agent described him as a humble man from a tough background and had become a "hero in everyone's eyes."

Senzo Meyiwa’s girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, is a South African singer and celebrity.
