Ban Ki Moon in Liberia: pledges UN support to Liberia

 (, Dec. 19, 2014)-The United Nations has announced its commitment to support Liberia’s recovery programs.

United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, said the UN is concerned about the far-reaching impact Ebola has created for Liberia and other Ebola- affected countries.

Mr. Ban said: “The UN will support Liberia restore basic social services, including the economy, during and after the containment of the Ebola Virus in the country.”

“We appreciate the efforts of the Liberian people for the significant progress made in the fight against Ebola, “the UN Secretary General noted.

Mr. Ban also appealed to the International Community to continue its support to Liberia and other Ebola-affected countries in the Sub-Region.

He said: “There is a dire need to galvanize more resources and to embark on robust contact tracing to contain the Virus.”

At the same time, the UN Envoy cautioned Liberians to abide by all preventive measures, instituted by health authorities, as they go to the polls Saturday, December 20, 2014.

Mr. Ban called for the conduct of a peaceful election in Liberia, describing the process as a means of testing the country’s emerging democracy.

He spoke Friday, December 19, 2014 at a joint press conference with President Ellen Sirleaf at the Foreign Ministry in Monrovia.

Earlier, President Johnson-Sirleaf expressed gratitude to the UN Secretary General and delegation for the visit to Liberia.

The Liberian Leader then paid tribute to the UN for its continued support to the country over the years, especially during the current health crisis.-
