ECC declares Senatorial Election free, fair, credible

(elbcradio.com/Liberia/Dec. 22, 2014)-The Election Coordinating Committee (ECC) has described the just-ended Special Senatorial Election as free, fair, credible and transparent.

The local election monitoring group is commending the National Elections Commission (NEC) for conducting such election. NEC, however, said: “There were some administrative lapses and isolated cases of irregularities during the process.”

In its preliminary report on the electoral process, the ECC said: “A number of lapses ranging from late opening of some polling stations to the difficulties faced by election observers in getting to some polling centers.”

On the issue of irregularities, the group reported that an unidentified man, believed to be NEC worker, took away some ballot papers and drove off in a private vehicle to an unspecified location.

The ECC also said: “We consider the man’s action as being a critical incident that requires NEC’s thorough and immediate investigation.”

“The Ebola preventive measures, put in place by NEC, were inadequate,” the local election monitoring group also noted.

The Election Coordinating Committee deployed 2,000 observers across Liberia to monitor the Special Senatorial Election held Saturday, December 20, 2014.

Meanwhile, the ECC wants political parties and independent candidates consider due process as a way of seeking redress regarding any grievances concerning the election’s conduct and outcome.
