Liberia's former Chief of Staff, Suraj Abdurrahman is dead

( 29, 2015)-Liberias former Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), Suraj Alao Abdurrahman has died.

Major General Abdurrahman died Wednesday, January 28, 2015 in New York, where he had undergone medical treatment for an undisclosed protracted period of ailment. The former AFL Chief of Staff successfully led post-war Liberias Armed Forces resurgence.

Making the disclosure in Monrovia Wednesday, Defense Minister, Brownie Samukai, said: Liberia and the AFL were indebted to Major General Abdurrahman for his immense contributions towardLiberias post-war transformation.

Minister Samukai said he had received the news of the passing of the former AFL Chief of Staff at about 11:35pm local time, from Nigerian military authorities.

He apparently was not well when he left here last year. He went to New York, where he was being treated. The treatment was going on quite well, from what we understand, until the last few days, said Minister Samukai.

He recalled that Major General Abdurrahman,a military man, well-grounded in the field and, always willing and ready to teach, told us: The best morale that you can give a soldier is adequate training.

Minister Samukai said President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has been officially informed about the sad news.

According to the Defense Ministry Boss, the Commander-In-Chief of the AFL was planning to recognize the former AFL Chiefs contributions to the Liberian army during the observance of the upcoming Armed Forces Day celebration on February 11 in Liberia.

The President is deeply saddened by the loss. His legacy in training the Liberian army will always be remembered.

At his turnover ceremony in February 2014, Gen. the Defense Minister quotes Major General Abdurrahmanas having said: I was happy to have helped the new Liberian Army and I have no doubt that the new Army can carry out its duties well.

I want to thank the new army and the people of Liberia for accepting me to help in the reconstruction of the new AFL, Minister Samukai also quotes General Abdurrahman as saying.

He assumed command of the army in June 2007 and succeeded fellow Nigerian, Lt. General Luka Yusuf. He born on September 9, 1954 and earned a Degree in Philosophy and architecture from the Heriot-Watt University in the United Kingdom.

Also, he served as an architect and Engineer Officer of the Nigerian Army, prior to taking up the Chief of Staff post in Liberia. Abdurrahman was educated at LEA Primary School, Maiduguri Road, KADUNA (196167); Government College, KEFFI WASC, 1972.

He entered the Nigerian Army as an Officer Cadet on NDA Regular Course 14 in 1973 and later attended the Nigerian Defense Academy, KADUNA NDACE, in 1974.
