Kumasi prison clashes leave one inmate dead

From: BBC

At least one person was reportedly killed and four others wounded in clashes at a prison in Kumasi, Ghana.

The incident occurred when inmates tried to escape after a fire broke out in the area.

The BBC said security officers battled with the prisoners, leaving one inmate dead and four policemen wounded.
The BBC quotes officials as saying the fire was caused by lightning.

Kumasi prison Spokesman, James Annan, said they opened the cells to save the inmates’ lives. Other reports said some inmates stole prison officers’ clothes and tried to escape by climbing a wall.

Police reinforcement was then brought in to help restore order, as the situation threatened to deteriorate.

Mr. Annan further explained that the prisoners threw bricks, chairs and other objects at the police in an attempt to escape the prison.

Officers retaliated by firing tear gas and later shot dead the one inmate (name not mentioned) when he tried to snatch a gun.
