(elbcradio.com/Liberia/Feb. 9, 2015)-President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has, by proclamation, declared Wednesday, February 11 as Armed Forces Day.

The Day was set aside by an Act of the National Legislature to be observed throughout Liberia as a National Holiday.

The essence of the Act is to give Liberians the opportunity to recognize the vital role of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) in defending and protecting the country’s territorial integrity.

A Foreign Ministry release said: “The Proclamation directs and orders all military and para-military organizations in the country to organize and execute appropriate parades and programs in recognition of the Day.”

The Proclamation also directs that special attention and honor be given veterans of the army and the Coastguard.
It further orders that all government offices, public and business houses be closed during the Day’s observance.

The release also noted: “Liberia has found it necessary to recognize the talents, services, patriotism, and gallantry of the members of the army for the upkeep of the country’s noble heritage.”

“With the passage of the National Defense Act of 2008, the AFL remain steadfast in supporting the foundation for long-term security and economic development in Liberia,” the Proclamation also said.

It added: “The AFL remains steadfast in fostering regional peace for the consolidation of the country’s emerging democracy.”
