Somali MP, Abdullahi Barre, shot dead

From: BBC

A Somali Member of Parliament, Abdullahi Qayad Barre, has been shot dead in Mogadishu.

MP Barre was assassinated by Islamist militants from the al-Shabab Movement. The incident occurred near the Presidential Palace when gunmen opened fire on his car.

A Spokesman for al-Shabab said the group had carried out the attack and would target other members of Parliament.

Western media says Barre’s death came amid tight security as lawmakers gathered to vote on whether to approve a new cabinet.
It is the latest in a string of assassination of politicians in the war-torn country.

At least five members of Parliament were murdered last year (2014), and Barre is the first MP killed this year (2015). Al-Shabab described Barre as a “legitimate target”, calling MPs “despotic infidels” to be targeted continuously.

Al-Shabab, affiliated with al-Qaeda, was pushed out of the Somali Capital, Mogadishu, by African peace-keeping forces in 2011.
