Niger declares State of Emergency in Diffa

From: BBC

Niger has declared a 15-day State of Emergency in the Diffa border region.

The State of Emergency declaration came after a spate of attacks by Nigerian Militant Islamist group, Boko Haram.

The declaration gives troops in the region new powers to search homes without a warrant and imposes a curfew.  The BBC says Boko Haram has intensified its campaign against neighboring states in recent weeks.

The group attacked Chadian army positions in north-eastern Nigeria Wednesday, February 11, 2015, but were repelled.

Chadian troops are in Gamboru Town in Nigeria’s Borno State after capturing the town from Boko Haram last week.
The troops are part of a regional coalition fighting Boko Haram, whose militants are increasingly attacking the area around Lake Chad.

Lake Chad is crossroads between Nigeria, Chad and Niger.
