(elbcradio.com/Feb. 19, 2015)-A UN official wants the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization (BIN) strengthened.

When the two local security agencies are braced, they will have the professional capacity to assume state security responsibilities, following the departure of the UN troops from Liberia.

The Liberia News Agency (LINA) says the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to Liberia, Karin Landgren, made the statement recently when she met with media institutions’ managers in Monrovia.

The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) is expected to pull out of the country by the end of June, 2016 after more than a decade of peace-keeping in country’s post-war era.

Madam Landgren reminded the Liberian Government of its primary responsibility for national security and the protection of its citizenry.

She said: “Against this backdrop, the Government is working on a transition plan for building the most urgently-needed national security capacity before UNMIL handover the final security responsibility.”

The UNMIL official then praised Justice Minister, Benedict Sannoh and Dr. Thomas Jaye, for working along with the Kofi Annan International Peace-Keeping Training Center in the Ghanaian Capital, Accra.

The Kofi Annan International Peace-Keeping Training Center is taking such national plan forward.

Madam Landgren encouraged Liberians to approach the transition with the same determination, consultation and pride with which they have brought Ebola to the brink of extinction.
