The Day is to be observed throughout the country as a national holiday. A Foreign Ministry release quotes President Johnson-Sirleaf as saying: “The Proclamation is in consonance with an act of the National Legislature.”

“The Act, approved October 24, 1916, declared the second Wednesday in March of each year as Decoration Day,” the Proclamation also said.

In the public statement, the Liberian Leader ordered that the National Ensign be flown at half-mast from all public buildings, military camps and private residences from 12-noon to 5:30 PM on the day. The President adds: “It is befitting that a day be set aside to celebrate the memory of the dead who lived and died in the interest of the Liberian Nation.”

She further noted in the Proclamation: “Celebrating the memory of the dead also keeps alive their deeds and invaluable contributions to the Nation for onward march to progress.”
