NEC releases names of candidates in Rivercess By-Election

( 12, 2015)- The National Elections Commission (NEC) has released the official Provisional List of Candidates for the Rivercess County Electoral District Number 2 Representative By-Election.

The list was released Tuesday, March 10, 2015 following the nomination of candidate desirous of contesting the By-Election.

A NEC statement is quoted as saying: “Ten persons, including nine political parties, have expressed interest to contest the By-Election in the district.

The political parties include Congress for Democratic Change, Alternative National Congress, Unity Party, National Patriotic Party, Union of Liberian Democrats, and Liberty Party.
Others are National Democratic Coalition, People’s Unification and the Movement for Progressive Change.

Of the entire Provisional List, only one Independent Candidate, Hilary Mento, has applied to contest the election.  All the candidates are females, except one.

“The list is being scrutinized by the Commission to ensure that only individuals who meet the legal requirements are allowed to contest the By-Election,” the statement said.

Consistent with the key dates for the Rivercess County Electoral District Number 2 Representative By-Election, the final list of qualified candidates will be released Wednesday, March 25, 2015.

According to the timetable, political campaign runs from March 25 to April 19, 2015, while the official date for the By-Election is April 21.

“The By-Election comes as a result of the election of Representative Francis Paye as Senator during the December 2014 Special Senatorial Election.

It is being conducted in accordance with Article 37 of the Liberian Constitution,” the statement concluded.
