(elbcradio.com//Mar.13, 2015)- President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, has, by Proclamation, declared Sunday, March 15, as the 206th Birth Anniversary of former President, Joseph Jenkins Roberts and is to be observed as a National Holiday.

However, since the day falls on Sunday, official celebration will be observed Monday, March 16.

A Foreign Ministry release quotes a Presidential Proclamation as saying the day is in consonance with an Act of the 42nd National Legislature in its Third Session in recognition of the first President of Liberia, declared March 15 of year as a National Holiday.

According to the Proclamation, the day is also a mark of respect and reverence to the memory of President Roberts and his untiring efforts in organizing the first Government of the Republic of Liberia.

In the Proclamation, President Sirleaf said: “It is befitting that such honor accorded the memory of this distinguished Statesman serves as a challenge to all Liberians to inspire to higher and nobler endeavors.

The Proclamation also manifests courage, endurance, selflessness and commitment to the principles and ideals of democracy as portrayed in his works as Liberia’s first President.

It further directs that in observance of the day, all public buildings, business and entertainment centers, are to remain closed from six in the morning to six in the evening. During the Administration of President Roberts, he devoted much of his time to the diplomatic recognition of Liberia and territorial expansion of the country.

This triggered political negotiations and conclusion of several treaties with foreign powers in Europe and the United States of America. Such negotiations, backed by political goodwill, paved the way for the formation and recognition of Liberia in1847 as an independent nation in Africa.

Since then, Liberia has become an outstanding founding member of several international organizations, including, the Mano River Union(MRU), Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS), African Union(AU), United Nations(UN), among others.
