(, 2015)-Liberian President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, says the proposed Constitutional amendments represent the views and aspirations of the Liberian people.

President Sirleaf said:” The outcome of the Constitutional Conference will produce a revised Constitution that Liberians can truly accept.”

“Liberians should focus on the propositions that require such amendments, as Government is committed to supporting the Constitutional reform process,” she said.

The Liberian Leader made the statement Monday at the opening of the National Conference organized by the Constitution Review Committee (CRC)
Sometime last year, the Constitution Review Committee was constituted by President Sirleaf, with Cllr. Gloria Scott, serving as Chairperson.

Prior to the ongoing Gbarnga deliberations, the Committee has been holding series of nationwide consultations to ensure the participations of Liberians in the process.

In recent years, there have been widespread concerns by some political actors about certain provisions of the 1986 Constitution.

One account of their argument says the tenures of the President and members of the National Legislature should be reduced to six and nine years, respectively.

Another account also indicates that the Constitution was silent on key issues under the eligibility clauses for Liberians wishing to hold elective positions.

The Constitution provides that the tenures of the President and members of the House of Representatives shall be six years, while those of the Senate for nine years.

Despite all these, it is incumbent upon all Liberians to embrace this worthy national endeavor to avoid unforeseen constitutional crisis.
