(elbcradio.com/May 23, 2015)-The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appealed for financial assistance to facilitate the conduct of impending democratic elections in three West African States.

Although no specific dates were given, the ECOWAS Authority hoped that the elections scheduled to take place this year in Burkina Faso, Guinea and Cote d’Ivoire will also be peaceful, democratic, inclusive and credible.

The appeal was contained in a 10-page communiqué issued at the close of the 47th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS in Accra, Ghana.

In the communiqué, the Authority expressed satisfaction with the Nigeria and Togo presidential elections, adjudged by ECOWAS and, local and international observers as “free, credible and transparent.”

The Authority congratulated General Muhammadu Buhari on his election as President of Nigeria and Faure Gnassingbé on his re-election as
President of Togo.

According to the communiqué, “the Summit equally commends out-going Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, for his dignified and democratic conduct deserving of a statesman.

Such conduct, demonstrated by out-going President Jonathan, largely contributed to the peace that continues to prevail after the elections results were declared.”

The Authority reaffirms its commitment to deepening the democratic culture and promoting good governance in West Africa, the communiqué added.
