(elbcradio.com/May 28, 2015)-The Liberian Government says it will begin disbursing salary checks to nearly 2,000 contractors of the Liberia Beaches and Waterways Project.

The Government said the disbursement will begin Friday, May 29, 2015.

Hundreds of the project contractors stormed the Finance and Development Planning Ministry Monday demanding eight month salary arrears.

Finance and Development Planning Ministry’s Director of Communications, Bernard Waritay, said following a meeting with the beach workers’ leadership, the Government promised to pay them five month arrears.

Mr. Waritay also said the balance three months would be paid during the 2015/2016 budget year.

He said: “It was agreed that the group negotiates with their lawmakers to include in the 2015/2016 fiscal budget the three month allotment that the Government owes them.”

“As part of the negotiation, the contractors have been told to stop work pending their inclusion in the next fiscal budget,” Mr. Waritay further noted.

The Liberia Beaches and Waterways Project is a new initiative designed to keep beaches and waterways clean.
