( 20, 2015)-President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has conferred distinctions on some Liberians and other distinguished personalities for their key roles played in the Ebola fight in the country.

The program is part of activities marking the country’s 168th Independence Day Celebration.

Those honored include Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Francis Kateh, the Head of the Incident Management System, Tolbert Nyenswah, the Head of the ELWA-TWO Ebola Treatment Unit, Dr. Jerry Brown and a humanitarian, Rev. Trevor Cockings.

President Johnson-Sirleaf also honored the Head of the Ebola Burial Team, Mark Korvayan, and some Ebola survivors.

According to an Executive Mansion release, all healthcare workers, including those who lost their lives during the Ebola outbreak, were honored, eight of them posthumously.

The investiture ceremony took place Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Monrovia City Hall in Monrovia.

The ceremony was held in the presence of high-ranking government officials, diplomats, well-wishers and family members of the honorees.

She also bestowed distinctions on institutions that were also instrumental in containing the virus from spreading further.

Meanwhile, Press Union of Liberia (PUL) President, Abdullah Kamara, has described as a “minimum recognition” the latest honor bestowed on the media by the Liberian Government.

Mr. Kamara, however, wants journalists take the honor as an impetus to work harder and professionally.

The PUL was among several institutions that received the country’s highest honor for the media’s contributions to containing the ebola virus.

Mr. Kamara said: “Journalists were simply doing their work and were keen on doing all they could to curb the virus, because they have a social responsibility to make their society a better place.”

The PUL President called for greater support to enhance the work of the media by empowering them locally and internationally.
