(elbcradio.com/July 28, 2015)-Liberia Senior National Football Team, the Lone Star, has been paired against Guinea Bissau in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier’s preliminary rounds.

Liberia will host Guinea Bissau Sunday, October 7 2015 in Monrovia in the first leg, before traveling to Bissau for the return leg in two week’s time.

Liberia and Guinea Bissau were drawn against each other at the draw held in St. Petersburg, Russia at the weekend.

Lone Star will have to eliminate its Guinea Bissau in counterpart in the two legs to qualify for the second preliminary round, where Africa’s Champions, Ivory Coast, are  seated waiting for the winner of the Liberia vs. Guinea Bissau fixture.

Ivory Coast will play the winner of that fixture at home and away in November.

The winner of those rounds will than qualify for the Group Stages of the competition before joining 19 other qualifiers, with the 20 participating teams to be divided in five groups of four.

The winners of each group will qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals, due in Russia.

Fifty-three African countries were in the draw, with only Zimbabwe missing, following their expulsion by FIFA for failing to pay a former coach.

Africa has been allocated five spots in the finals, to be played in Russia from 14 June to 15 July, 2018.

The 26 lowest ranking countries in Africa, including Liberia, are the teams playing in the first preliminary round.
Lone Star has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals in the country’s 168 years of existence.

Football analysts think Liberia cannot make it to the 2018 FIFA World Cup group stage, owing to the manner and form football is been supported and managed in the country.

Central Government’s support to football is low and such low support has seen all of Liberian football teams, both clubs and national teams, suffered elimination at the early stages of competitions.

Since the departure of the famous ‘George Weah Eleven,” the Liberian Senior National Team have found it difficult, if not impossible, to make marks in qualifying rounds of competitions.

The Lone Star is in Group A of the 2017 Nations Cup qualifiers and will host the next match in the competition in September at home against Algeria.

There is no training for the Lone Star currently ongoing in the country, ahead of that match.
