(elbcradio.com/Aug. 17, 2015)-Foreign Minister, Augustine Ngafuan, says Liberia considers the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) very vital in its governance process.

Minister Ngafuan said: “ECOWAS’ role in making Liberia stable during and after years of civil conflict cannot be overemphasized.”

He recalled that the regional body’s peace monitoring group, ECOMOG, was one of the pillars in Liberia’s peace restoration and transformation processes.

The Liberian Foreign Minister also said: “The consolidation of the country’s democracy cannot be spoken about without recognizing the role ECOWAS played and continues to play in ensuring stability in the West African nation.”

Minister Ngafuan made the statement over the weekend when he hosted a four-man ECOWAS delegation, headed by the ECOWAS Commission’s Vice President, Toga McIntosh.

Speaking earlier, Dr. McIntosh noted that he was in country to meet with key financial stakeholders, including the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, and the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA).

“The regional body’s resources were declining and that steps needed to be taken to fill the gaps,” he further noted.

Dr. McIntosh disclosed plans by his delegation to cover the entire region and will hold meetings at both the political and technical levels in each nation.
