(elbcradio.com/August 19, 2015)-President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has opposed the proposal that Liberia becomes a Christian state.

The Christian state proposal is among several others submitted by the Constitution Review Committee (CRC)’s final report submitted Monday, August 17, 2015 to President Johnson-Sirleaf.

She said: “The fact that Liberia was founded on Christian principle does not mean the country was established as a Christian nation.”

The Liberian Leader further warned that any attempt to turn Liberia into a Christian nation would undermine other religions in the country.

She, however, concurred with several other proposals in the CRC’s report, including the 4-year tenure for the President and Representatives, and the 6-year tenure for Senators.

President Johnson-Sirleaf’s position on the Christian State proposition was contained in a communication submitted, along with the CRC report, to the Senate.

The President promised to submit additional reports regarding the usage of the pronouns, “he” and “she” in the Constitution.

Meanwhile, President Johnson-Sirleaf has called on the National Legislature to do due diligence to the report.
