( 31, 2015)-Carter Center’s Country Lead for the Liberia Mental Health Initiative (LMHI), Janice Cooper, has warned against stigmatizing mentally ill people in the country.

Dr. Cooper sounded the warning recently at the close of a two-day Anti-Stigma workshop on “Mental Health and the Media,” held in Monrovia.

According to Dr. Cooper, discrimination has a very direct and real effect on the treatment of a person’s mental illness, or substance abuse problem.

The Carter Center official is meanwhile appealing to the Liberian Media to create the necessary awareness for mentally ill people by enlightening the population against stigmatizing them.

The workshop, the fifth in a series, was organized by the Carter Center, in collaboration with the Press Union of Liberia (PUL).

At the same time, journalists who attended the workshop have formed a network known as, “Mental Illness Reporting Network.”
