Al-Shabab overruns AU military base in Somalia

from BBC

(elbcradio.com/Sept 2, 2015)-Fighters of the al-Shabab militant Islamist group have overrun an African Union (AU) military base in southern Somalia, inflicting heavy casualties.

The militants said they have killed 70 AU soldiers at the Janale Base, 90-kilometers, south-east of the Capital. AU forces have, however, insisted they are still in control of the base.

Al-Shabab is linked to al-Qaeda and is battling the AU-backed Somali Government for control of the area.

Residents told the BBC that the attack started with a suicide car bombing at the base's gate, followed by sustained gunfire that lasted for more than an hour.
They said AU forces were seen leaving the base, run by the Ugandan troops.

A Somali army officer, Ahmed Hassan, told the Associated Press that the militants damaged a nearby bridge with a massive bomb to prevent troops from escaping.

Col. Hassan also said the militants had seized the base.
