(elbcradio.com/Sept. 18, 2015)-Foreign Minister, Augustine Ngafuan, says the incoming Special Representative to the UN Secretary General (SRSG) has double mandate.

Minister Ngafuan said Mr. Farid Zarif’s mandate is not just to dismantle a building, but to construct its replacement.

“I entertain no doubt that given the credential the incoming UN Envoy possesses and the passion he has for Liberia, he has come with the necessary energy to do a good job here in the country,” Mr. Zarif also said.

Mr. Ngafuan assured that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would do all in its reach to cooperate with and assist the UN Envoy in navigating through the Liberian government bureaucracy.

“The Ministry would always remain supportive of the efforts of accredited diplomats and would ensure that diplomats are happy during their services in Liberia,” he emphasized.
The Dean of the Liberian Cabinet then thanked the outgoing SRSG, Karim Landgren, for the mutual cooperation.

For his part, the new SRSG thanked the Government and People of Liberia, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for the trust and confidence they have begun reposing in him even before formally assuming office in Liberia.

The Mr. Zarif said: "I feel privilege to have received your endorsement of my coming by your warm reception since my arrival the country.

“I believe the warm reception that I have received from you has   made me steadfast in my commitment to serve the people of Liberia," he stressed.

The UN Envoy noted that the dismantling of structures by the UNMIL in the first phase of the drawdown is a clear testimony of the numerous progress and accomplishments made by the Liberian Government and people.

He recalled that the collective strives by the Liberian people have further increased their confidence that they can now take over some of the initiatives that the international community had embarked upon. “The international community will only complement your efforts,” Mr. Zarif further noted.

The new SRSG later hailed the Liberian Government for the huge accomplishments, despite the growing challenges, and calamity, including the Ebola outbreak in the country.
