Burkina Faso's Interim President, Michel Kafando, says he is back in charge and civilian rule has been restored, after last week's military takeover.

Mr. Kafando pronouncement came as the coup leader, Gilbert Diendere, went to welcome several African leaders arriving to oversee the transfer of power.

Gen Diendere’s presidential guard had agreed to a deal overnight with the regular army to avoid violence. They pledged to return to the barracks and the army to withdraw from the Capital, Ouagadougou.

The presidential guard (RSP) is loyal to Blaise Compaore, the country's long-time ruler ousted in a popular uprising in 2014.
The elite troops installed Gen Diendere as the leader of Burkina Faso last week - a month before elections had been due in the landlocked country.

Monday, the army ordered the coup leader to step down, or be ousted by force, raising the specter of a civil war.
