(, 2015)-The Assistant Representative of the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) in Liberia, Dr. Philderald Pratt, has underscored the key role youth empowerment plays in ensuring peace in society.

Mr. Pratt emphasized: “Global empowerment through investment in the youth population remains the surest way of cultivating and sustaining the much needed peace any country craves.”

He made the statement recently at program marking the celebration of International Day of Peace, and the launch of the Amman Declaration on Youth Peace and Security.

The program was organized by Messengers of Peace, a local volunteer youth organization.

The Amman Declaration on Youth Peace and Security is a global protocol adapted in Amman, Jordan from 21-22 August 2015 by young people from across the world at a global forum on youth peace and security.

To further guarantee peace in any nation, he said: “Youths must be encouraged and capacitated so that they can be part of the peace building process. Investment in youth empowerment starts from the family.”

Since 1979, UNFPA has been involved in the provision of humanitarian assistance in Liberia, especially in the health sector, where it has helped to deliver better emergency obstetric and newborn care, prevent and treat obstetric fistula among others.

The UN organ is also currently working to enhance youth development and providing support to targeted sexual and reproductive healthcare services.

Also, it is making available comprehensive sexual education and undertaking analysis to inform policies on youth, gender equality and sexual reproductive health.
