(elbcradio.com/Dec.9, 2015)-The European Union (EU) says it is committed to supporting civil society organizations to improve the effectiveness of their operations.

The EU Head of Delegation to Liberia, Ambassador, Tiina Intelmann, said: “The EU would begin empowering civil society organizations in early 2016 following the submission and careful scrutiny of proposals to the Union.”

Ambassador Intelmann made the commitment Tuesday at the opening session of the Annual General Assembly of Civil Society Organizations in Kakata, Margibi County.

The EU Envoy said: “The EU has earmarked five new grants to be signed with civil society organizations in Liberia. Of the five grants, two will be directed towards human rights and good governance promotion in the justice and security sectors.”

“The remaining three grants will be used for basic health services and early recovery of Ebola affected areas,” Ambassador Intelmann said.
Meanwhile, the EU has resumed Civil Society Structured Dialogue in Liberia.

The dialogue began since 2012 up to present, but it was interrupted during the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in the country.

According to EU authorities, the dialogue is intended to address challenges facing civil society organizations across the country.”
