(elbcradio.com/Dec. 10, 2015)-Liberia is expected to begin the validation and registration of small arms and light weapons in the country.

The Coordinator of the Liberia National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Blomo Sieh, said:“The exercise will commence following the passage of the Firearm Control Act currently before the National Legislature.”

Mr. Sieh made the disclosure recently when UNDP presented Information Technology equipment to the Commission on behalf of the European Union and ECOWAS Small Arms and Light Weapons Control Project.

He said: “The Liberia National Commission on Small Arms is also expected to launch a pilot project in three of Liberia’s fifteen counties to collect illicit weapons shortly.”

Mr. Sieh wants the speedy passage of the Fire Arm Act to put the Commission in the better position to begin the implementation of its statutory mandate.

The Liberia National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons has the oversight to handle all matters arising from illicit arm deals, possession, and other related violations of the UN Convention on Weaponry.

The Commission’s plan to register all small arms and light weapons followed UNMIL’s drawdown plan and subsequent departure from the country by June, 2016.

In recent months, there have been simultaneous upsurge of violence and armed robbery activities being perpetrated by unscrupulous individuals in Monrovia and other provincial cities across the country.

The Liberian Government has since warned individualsagainst the perpetration of violence and armed robbery or risk the correspondent consequences of the law.
