(elbcradio.com/Dec. 30, 2015)-The Government of Liberia has earmarked the construction of thirty-four mini-hydro power plants in rural Liberia.

Government says the proposed project is part of its partnership support fromthe Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA).

It is a Norwegian-funded program aimed at capacity building and the strengthening of the energy and water resources of Liberia.

As part of efforts to jump-start the initiative, Government has announced the discovery of 34 potential sites in eight of Liberia’s fifteen counties.

The feasibility sites, according to government sources, are located in Grand Gedeh, Grand Kru, Lofa, and River Gee Counties.

Others include Rivercess, Nimba, Sinoe and Maryland Counties.
The discovery of the proposed sites for the rural electrification project followed the release of the 2014 Annual Report by the Lands, Mines & Energy Ministry.

The Rural Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) was established in January, 2010 by Executive Order Number 23 to facilitate and accelerate the economic transformation of rural Liberia.

It also seeks to promote commercial development and supply of modern energy services to rural areas by using renewable energy resources.

Meanwhile, Government has disclosed that it has already provided solar power at the Zorzor Central High School, the Immigration Check Point and other public facilities in the absence of electricity.
