Grand Bassa retains championship in County Meet

(elbcradio.com/Jan. 18, 2016)-Grand Bassa County has won  the 2015-2016 National County Sports Meet.

The National County Sports Meet’s defending Champions retained the 2015-2016 trophy when they defeated Montserrado County 4 – 2 in post-match penalties, after regular and extra time ended one all.

The game was played Sunday, January 17, 2016 at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) in Central Monrovia.

Montserrado County took the lead in the eleven minute of the first half of the match when Bright Tuloe’s shot beat goalkeeper Sekou Bayoh of Grand Bassa County.

Following the opener, Montserrado County continued pressing forward for additional goals.

Ralph George, Cyrus Harmon and Trokon Jackson embarked on a perfect coordination for Grand Bassa County mid-way into the half, but they did not gain the desired result.

The back four for Montserrado County, marshaled by Team Captain, Harrison Mah, denied their opponents’ move on goal on several occasions, thus ending the first half 1 – 0 in favor of Montserrado County.

Grand Bassa County started the second half with a more perfect coordination that kept the pressure on leader, Montserrado County, until they got the equalizer in the 57th minute from a David Paye strike that beat goalie, Andrew Donah, of Montserrado County.


Following the equalizer, the match was then reduced to a see-saw battle as both teams struggled to get the match winner, but were forced to settle down for post-match penalties which Grand Bassa County eventually won by a score of 4 – 2.

The win is now Grand Bassa County’s third in the football category of the National County Meet as the county won the trophy two years ago.

In the Basketball edition, Defending Champions, Grand Bassa County, defeated Grand Kru County 56 to 52 to win the trophy for the second time running.

Nimba County took third place over Gbarpolu County as the former defeated the latter 42 – 38 points.

Still at the National Sports Commission, Bomi County became the 2016 County Meet’s Volleyball Champions after they whipped Montserrado County three straight sets.

The match was played Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the National Sports Commission in Monrovia in front of a record crowd when Bomi County retained the trophy.

The Bomi County team was led by National Team player and Captain, Otis Nyanneh.

Meanwhile, in the Kickball edition, Nimba County beat Margibi County 4 – 0 Innes to lift the trophy. The game took place Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the ATS in Monrovia.

Following two months of sports activities across Liberia, the 2015/2016 edition of the National County Meet successfully came to a close Sunday at the ATS in Liberian Capital.
