Dr. Slawon wants 1989 Higher Education Act revised

(elbcradio.com/Jan.20, 2016)-The National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) is calling for the revision of the 1989 Act on Higher Education.

The National Commission on Higher Education Director General, Dr. Michael Slawon, said educational reforms are critical and necessary to standardize the odds of the sector.

Dr. Slawon said: “The revision of the 1989 Act will put the Commission in the better to improve higher education in Liberia.”

“The Act can no longer be used to regulate, monitor and evaluate the sector if must address the transformation of the country,” he emphasized.

He disclosed that are approximately 18 universities and 84 baccalaureate degree granting institutions, including 18 associate degree granting schools, respectively.

Dr. Slawon made the call Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at a one-day consultative forum on the draft amendment of the 1989 Act, establishing the National Commission on Higher Education.

Earlier, The Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Matthew Zarzar, thanked the Commission for the forum.

Representative Zarzar said the exercise was important and necessary, especially at the time the country’s education sector is undergoing a robust reform process.
