Liberia, China agree to prioritize agriculture

( 21, 2016)-Liberia and China have agreed to boost agriculture and fisheries production in the country.

They also agreed to explore new areas of investment in Liberia, especially in the agro sector to reshape to a diversified economy.

According to an Executive Mansion release, the two countries made the commitment Thursday, January 21, 2016 at the signing ceremony of a Letter of Intent.

The ceremony took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia during an official visit of a Chinese trade delegation. 

Agriculture Minister, Dr. Moses Zinnah, signed on behalf of Liberia, while Professor Lin Zhanxi, performed the signing ceremony on behalf of the Chinese delegation.

Earlier,President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf expressed appreciation over the Chinese delegation’s visit, especially at a critical time when Liberia is reshaping focus on diversification of economic potentials anchored on value addition.

The Liberian Leader said: “I would like to encourage the delegation to explore and access the prospects of doing business and capitalizing on investment opportunities with emphasis on the agro-processing sectors.”

“I am also delighted over the delegation’s visit and that Liberia is ready to attract more investment opportunities into the country,” President Sirleaf said.

In remarks, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Zhang Yue, said China remains fully committed to working closely with Liberia in fostering the country’s development agenda.

Also speaking, the Director of the Foreign Affairs’, Fujian Province and Head of Delegation, Song Kening, thanked President Sirleaf for affording them the opportunity to visit Liberia.

He assured the President their deep interest to invest in the areas of agriculture, fisheries and rice production.
