State of Nation: Liberia is peaceful and safe-Prez. Sirleaf

( 25, 2016)-Liberian President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, has outlined major achievements of government over the years.

President Sirleaf named security reform and road rehabilitation as some major achievements of government. The President said: “Liberia is peaceful and safe amidst the drawdown of the United Nations Mission of Liberia (UNMIL).”

She said: “The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), including other security apparatus, is ready to sustain the peace and security of the country beyond UNMIL.”

President Sirleaf gave the assurance Monday, January 25, 2016 when she delivered her 11th State of Nation Address at the Joint Chambers of the National Legislature in Monrovia.

She noted: “Government will continue with training programs, including the provision of incentives for security personnel to ensure effective and efficient performance.”

President Sirleaf assured the Liberian people of government’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and stable nation.

President Sirleaf said: “The sustenance of peace should not be the responsibility of government alone but the collective involvement of all Liberians.””

” Liberians can sustain the peace of the country if we all work together as we did during the Ebola crisis.” She emphasized. She said though government has inherited a collapsed economy, but some progress has been made in the revitalization of the sector.

The Liberian Leader, however, cautioned Liberians against tendencies capable of undermining the high earned peace and of the country.
The President’s State of the Nation Address is consistent with the provision of the 1986 Liberian Constitution.

Article 58 of the Liberian Constitution states that the President,  shall on the Fourth Working Monday in January of each year, present the administration’s legislative program for the ensuing session.

It also states that the President, shall once a year, report to the Legislature on the state of the Republic.

The occasion was graced by both current and former Government officials, Foreign Diplomats, Business and Religious Communities, Civil Society Organizations, Political Parties, among others.
