(elbcradio.com/Feb. 16, 2016)-Liberian Football Champions, Nimba United, suffered a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Cameroon side, Union Duala in the CAF Champions League Preliminary.

The match was played Sunday, February 14, 2016 at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) in Monrovia.

A poor goalkeeping gave Union Duala the opportunity to take the lead in the sixth minute, with Samuel Nlend scored a brace in just 24 minutes to give Union Duala a 2-0 lead.

Before the 42nd minute, Union Duala’s Gerome Hentchou added another goal, increasing the score line to 3-0, thus forcing Nimba United technical staff to change goalkeeper, Jeremiah Sackey, whose errors robbed the Liberian side of victory.

Adetus Evononye got a consolation for the Liberian Champions midway in the second half.

Nimba United will have to score 3-0 away to Union Duala next weekend, if the team must advance to the next round of the competition.

After the game, Union Duala head coach told reporters that Nimba United was the better side, but they suffered from lack of tactics that helped his side to pick the win in Monrovia.

“They (Nimba United) are a better team. They have lots of good players in their team. The Liberian team is very good, but they will have to work very hard during the away match” Duala Coach, Joseph Diallo, told reporters.

He said: “I cannot say my team is already through, because 90 minutes are still away. I’m happy winning here in Monrovia, because Liberian teams are difficult playing against.”

In an interview with reporters following Sunday’s game, Nimba United Coach, Kollie Korvy, attributed their defeat to poor goalkeeping.

“My goalkeeper just had a bad day. We will see what happens in the second leg in Duala. We haven’t given up yet, because we are capable of scoring several goals away like the Cameroonians did here today,” Coach Korvy further reacted.

The Nimba United Coach denied speculation that his arms were twisted by the Club’s CEO, Adolphus Dolo, in picking the second choice goalkeeper in place of first choice, Emmanuel Deaneh, who had a find game when he came on in the 44th minute.

He clarified: “Goalkeeper Jeremiah Sacky was chosen ahead of Emmanuel Deaneh, because the first choice was not match-fit.”

Union Duala, in past years, eliminated two Liberian teams at this stage of the competition. The Cameroonian team eliminated Mighty Barrolle in 1986 and knockout LISCR FC in 2013.
