Liberia celebrates first Presidents birthday

(elbcradio.com/Mar. 15, 2016)-Today, Tuesday March 15, is the 207th birth Anniversary of Liberia’s first President, Joseph Jenkins Roberts.
The day is being celebrated throughout the country as a national holiday.

The observance of the day is in consonance with an act of the National Legislature, declaring March 15 of each year as Joseph Jenkins Roberts’ birthday.

The national celebration of President Roberts’ birth Anniversary is also in recognition of his immense contributions to Liberia during his administration.

During the observance of the day, like all other national holidays in Liberia, all public and business houses were closed at 6 in the morning and will remained closed until 6 in the evening today.

Born on March 15, 1809, JJ Roberts, along with his wife and son, arrived in Liberia in 1829 from the United States of America.

During his administration, President Roberts secured additional land for the young republic through his administration’s expansion policy.

Also, he initiated the promotion of national peace and reconciliation among the Liberian populace, and worked tirelessly to ensure that the country receive recognition through international diplomacy.

The first Liberian President is also credited for leading the young nation to independence on July 26, 1847 and his extensive work in the education sector, among others.

The AMEU lecturer also said the former president will always be
remembered for his great leadership demonstrated during his administration.
