(lbsonline/Liberia)-The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon is challenging UN members’ states to double up efforts in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

The Millennium Development Goals calls for a halt to, a reversal of the HIV epidemic by 2015. He made the observation on World Aids Day.

Mr. Ban Ki-Moon message was read by UNFPA Country Director, Madam Esperance Fundira during the observance of this year’s World AIDS Day held on 1st December 2012 in Monrovia.

He praised several countries including 13 sub-Sahara African nations, for significant progress in preventing and treating of HIV/AIDS over the past two years.

Mr. Ban is calling on member states to also identify programs that will eliminate mother to child transmission, and ensure HIV positive mothers survive.

He insists that information on testing and treatment be made available to enable one enjoys the fundamental right to medical care and essential services to end the devastating epidemic.

UNAIDS 2012 report shows 60 percent increment in the number of people accessing HIV treatment, 50 percent reduction in new infection while AIDS related deaths have fallen by a quarter.
