UNICEFs Official, Foreign Minister confer

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Foreign Minister, Marjon Kamara, has assured the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) of her Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with his organization.

Minister Kamara said such collaboration is aimed at addressing critical challenges and other issues confronting UNMICEF’s work in Liberia.

According to a Foreign Ministry release, Minister Kamara made the statement Friday, April 15, 2016 when UNICEF Country Representative, Sheldon Yett, paid a courtesy call on her at her Foreign Ministry office in Monrovia.

The release said during the visit, the two officials exchanged views on critical issues of mutual concern.

The Liberian Foreign Minister commended UNICEF for the many positive initiatives, it is undertaking in Liberia and urged him to inform her on anything that requires the ministry’s intervention.

Such positive initiatives include children’s rights, survival, development and protection, among others

The release quotes Minister Kamara as encouraging Mr. Yett to also focus on peace-building initiatives at the community level, particularly among the young people of Liberia. 

The Dean of the Cabinet promised to work along with Mr. Yett and the UN organization to explore new areas of mutual interests and benefits to both sides during the remaining months of his tenure in the country.

Foreign Minister Kamara also praised the organization for all it continues to do for Liberia and its children, while, at the same time, looking forward to working along with UNICEF in solving some of the many critical issues of mutual interests to the Liberian people and the organization.

She promised to consult her legal team at the Ministry to seek legal advice to help address some of the challenges impeding UNICEF’s operations the country. 

Speaking earlier, Mr. Yett acquainted Minister Kamara with UNICEF's activities in the country and thanked her for swiftly addressing some of the critical issues at the Ministry since her appointment.

He also acquainted her with some of the challenges UNICEF- Liberia is being faced and called on her to assist the organization find amicable solutions to its many challenges.

Commenting on some of the challenges, the UNICEF Official said there is a lot to be done to ensuring that young people are engaged in activities that will transform their minds.

He added: “So much needs to be done to ensure that young people in Liberia are positively engaged in ventures that would transform their lives to enhance peace in Liberia.

The UNICEF Country Representative praised the Liberian Government for the many achievements, including enhancing good governance, saying: “Liberia has many good things, including freedom of speech that other countries don’t have.”
