Govt releases proposed Budget, education tops priority

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Government has released the 2016/2017 National Budget in the tone of over five hundred fifty-nine Million United States Dollars.

The budget’s priority areas include education and health topping the list in the tones of 83 and 77 million United States Dollars, respectively, while road construction amounts to 15- million.

Consistent with Constitutional provision, LiberianPresident, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has submitted the proposed budget to the National Legislature.

Presenting the budget on behalf of President Sirleaf to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alex Tyler, Finance and Development Planning Minister, Bomia Kamara, described the budget as challenging due to economic decline.

According to thebudget, 20- million United States Dollars has been appropriated for elections and ten point million for social development,

Minister Kamara said:“Thedecline of Liberia’s’ two primary commodities, rubber and iron ore, has placed severe strain on the revenue resource envelope.”

He said despite the economic constraints, the proposed budget has captured the country’s priority areas to ensure the implementation of Government’s Transformation Agenda.

Receiving the budget,Speaker Tyler commended the Executive for the submission and promised that the instrument will be turned over to the relevant committee to commence its legislative functions on the budget.
