MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Government has congratulated the Government and people of Italy on the occasion commemorating the 70th Anniversary of that country’s Republic Day.

Republic Day, also known as FestadellaRepublica in Italian (Festival of the Republic), is being celebrated today, June 2 by the Government and people of Italy.

It is also annual national event set aside by the Italian Government to be celebrated June 2 of each year. In commemoration of the day, Italians voted to abolish the monarchy in 1946, seeking the republican status of the country.

A Foreign Ministry release says Liberia’s message of congratulations to the Italian Government and people was sent on behalf of the country by President Ellen Johnson –Sirleaf.

In the message, the Liberian Chief Executive extended heartfelt congratulations to her Italian Counterpart, Sergio Mattarella.

President Sirleaf said:” The cordial ties of friendship subsisting between Italy and Liberia dated back to 1862, when Italy gave recognition to Liberia’s sovereignty.

“The cooperation between the two countries in several fields, notably, agriculture, education and health, continue to expand considerably,” she noted.

The Liberian Leader expressed appreciation that the first Italy-Africa Ministerial Conference of May 18, 2016, in Rome, created yet another platform for renewing bilateral consultations.

The release also quotes President Sirleaf as saying the conference focused on peacekeeping, peace-building and African ownership, especially from the perspective of economic and environmental sustainability.

She also emphasized:  “Liberia welcomes Italy’s decision to consolidate support to the African Union through the Italian-Africa Peace Facility (IAPF) and looks forward to the pending Joint Framework for Bilateral Cooperation, as well as the MOU on Economic Cooperation.”

President Sirleaf assured her Italian counterpart that Liberia remains resolute in collaborating with Italy for the deepening and enrichment of the already excellent ties of friendship subsisting between the two countries.

She then wished President Mattarella good health, happiness and sustained peace and prosperity for the Government and people of Italy.
