MONROVIA, LIBERIA- A total of 46, 934 12th Graders have begun writing this year’s Senior High School Certificate Exams across Liberia.

According to authorities of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the candidates have been drawn from 513 schools throughout the country.

WAEC Head, John Gayvolor, said: “The students will only write Mathematics for the first day of the exams Monday, June 27, 2016, while two subjects will be administered Tuesday, June 28, 3016.”

“It is our anticipation that the candidates will exert a sense of honesty for a fraud-free exam,” Mr. Gayvolor said.

He said the exams will be administered from Monday, June 27- Friday, July 1, 2016.

The Senior High School Exams, scheduled for May 23-27, 2016, were cancelled due to exam leakage in Margibi County following a reported burglary at the SDA Kornola Mission School where copies of the exams were taken away.

Prior to the 2016 postponement of the exams, authorities of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) also cancelled the 2007 Senior High School Certificate Exams due to leakage.

Following the incident, WAEC launched an investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice to serve as a deterrent.

But, up to press time, the findings of the investigation have not been made public.

For two long, there have been mixed public reactions over the downward trend of the nation’s education sector.

Some education stakeholders described the educational system as “messy”, occasioned by rampant unethical acts, poor performance of students in public exams, among others.

As a consequence of such development, the Education Ministry has launched a reform process of the entire system under the gavel of its new Minister, George Werner.

As part of the reform process,  the Ministry  also ordered the early closure of schools and the postponement of the Senior High School Certificate Exams during the 2015/2016 School Year.

However, another account of the argument indicates that the system has made significant improvement under the Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf-led Administration.

The West African Examinations Council has the statutory mandate to formulate appropriate policies and programs aimed at evaluating and certificating students as a perquisite to seeking higher education in Liberia.
