MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alex Tyler’ says his recusal from presiding over plenary is an ultimate sacrifice that will move the country forward.

Speaker Tyler said the crisis, triggered by calls for his recusal, has affected the smooth functions of the House of Representatives and Senate at the National Legislature.

He said the House of Representatives’ internal fighting also affected the hearings and passage of the National budget, which, he alleged, was called off by the Executive Branch of Government.

The calls for Speaker Tyler’s recusal were triggered by a Global Witness report indicting current and former government officials, including recused Speaker Tyler.

He accused the government of not conferring with those involved in the report, including him, to adduce evidence of their exoneration of guilt.
Speaker Tyler also accused President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of being behind the calls for his recusal, expressing fears about the upcoming 2017 elections.

He said the event unfolding at the Lower House divided every social sector of the government, including the Judiciary, the Senate, the Traditional Council and the Media.

Speaker Tyler also blamed the closure of Lib 24 Radio/ TV Stations and Voice FM for their stance against the government’s alleged intention to remove him.
