MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf says the media is a “Strong force” that can lead a nation to prosperity, if used responsibly.

The President Johnson-Sirleaf said responsible media requires responsibility to gain knowledge, be balanced, truthful and strong.

The Liberian Leader made the statement in her tribute at the memorial service for fallen Liberian journalist, Mamadee Diakite.

Journalist Diakite’s memorial service was held Saturday, September 3, 2016 at the Monrovia City Hall in Monrovia.

She added that responsibility also requires patriotism and love for one’s country. “Mr. Diakite demonstrated all these values in his Journalism career.”

“When Liberia’s story is written, the fallen journalist will stand tall, because of his role in the media,” the President also noted in her tribute.

President Johnson-Sirleaf further praised Mamadee Diakite for his professionalism, saying: “He will be remembered for his fearlessness and consistency in what he believed in.”

Meanwhile, former Information Minister, Emmanuel Bowier, says no tribe, or any group of people owns Liberia, rather Liberia belongs to every tribe living in the country.”

Mr. Bowier, also regarded in Liberia as a historian, made the assertion Saturday, September 3, 2016 at a memorial service for the death of Journalist Mamadee Diakite at the Monrovia City Hall.

Making specific reference to the Bassa Tribe to which he belongs, Mr. Bowier said: “The people of that tribal group always claim to be owners of Liberia. This claim is wrong.”

“The Bassa, like any other tribal group in Liberia, came from somewhere to settle in Liberia. No tribe owns the Liberia more than the other,” he emphasized.

“The root of the Bassa people can be traced to Mombasa, Kenya, and then to Nigeria, Cameroon and Ivory Coast.”

The former Information Minister described the Mamadee as a patriot who stood for his country and identity with courage and confidence.
