Gov’t lauds UN for sustaining peace in Liberia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Acting Foreign Minister, Elias Shoniyin, is commending the United Nations for its support to the restoration and maintenance of peace in Liberia.
According to a Foreign Ministry release, Minister Shoniyin made the commendation when he received in audience an 18-member UN delegation currently visiting Liberia.
The delegation was headed by Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, El Ghassim Wane.

The group was accompanied to the Foreign Ministry by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) to Liberia, Farid Zarif.

Acting Minister Shoniyin told the UN delegation that the Liberian Government appreciates the current configuration of UNMIL until after 2017.

Minister Shoniyin expressed optimism that the 2017 elections will go on without any crisis.

Responding, UNMIL SRSG, Farid Zarif, spoke of how the UN values the quality of its relationship with the Liberian Government and people.

Mr. Zarif said: “Such relationship has strengthened our resolve to work together for the enhancement of peace and stability for the government and people of Liberia and the international community.”

Also making remarks, UN Assistant Secretary-General Wane noted: “The UN Assessment Team is cognizant of the fact that other things might have been missed.”

“We will tackle what needs to be done to consolidate peace and security in Liberia.”
