AU ready to intervene in Gabon crisis –Pres. Deby

The African Union (AU) says it is ready to send a delegation to Gabon, where a day of post-election violence has led to unrest.

AU President, Idriss Deby, in a statement said the delegation was ready to be dispatched to Libreville as soon as the conditions for such a visit are met. 

According to the BBC, the delegation will be accompanied by senior officials of the AU Commission and the United Nations.

The AU President made the disclosure Monday, September 6, 2016.

Mr. Deby also said the AU continues is following the situation in Gabon and maintaining a constant liaison with the Gabonese main actors, and with other stakeholders concerned.

He reaffirmed the readiness of the AU, with the regional countries and concerned partners’ willingness to assist the parties in Gabon in their search for a rapid settlement to the country’s post-election crisis.

Gabon’s post-election violence has reportedly claimed about five lives and hundreds of people have sustained injuries.
