Ghana’s Elections Commission disqualifies 13 presidential candidates

GHANA-The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana on Monday, October 9, 2016 disqualified 13 presidential candidates from contesting this year's elections, while the Commission qualified only four candidates.

The qualified candidates are John Dramani Mahama of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), and Jacob Osei Yeboah, an independent candidate.

All nominees of the disqualified political parties will not be allowed to partake in the 2016 race as presidential candidates for violating various aspects of the electoral laws of Ghana, EC Chairman, Charlotte Osei, told a press conference in Accra.

Madam Osei named the violations for which the political parties were disqualified as fraudulent signatures, absence of required number of signatures, and improper filling of nomination forms.

She added that some of the fraudulent information provided by the nominees would be followed up on by the police for possible arrest and prosecution.

Ghana goes to the polls on Dec. 7 to elect a president and 275 Members of Parliament.
