Liberia brainstorms on granting asylum

(lbsonline/Liberia)-The Liberian Government is brainstorming on procedures in granting asylum to individuals seeking refuge in the country.

Four line government ministries and some agencies are holding the discussions.

The institutions holding the discussions include the Ministries of Planning and Economic Affairs, Internal Affairs, Justice and Foreign Affairs.

The Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC), and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are agencies also taking part in the brainstorming exercise.

LRRRC Executive Director, Wheatonia Dixson Barnes, said: “The granting of asylum depends on the merits and demerits of stories presented by individuals seeking such opportunity in Liberia”.

“The determination is made by two committees including the appeal and asylum committees, to establish the merits and demerits of stories presented government”, Cllr. Barns said.
The LRRRC boss Spoke Monday 7th January, 2013 at a two-day workshop in Monrovia.

She said: “The training will further strengthen the capacity of members of the two committees to effectively perform”.

Cllr. Barns however called for the practice of good governance in various countries around the world to avoid people seeking asylum.
