MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The ECOWAS Authority Chairperson, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, has issued a strong statement saying she is deeply troubled by the current political development in the Gambia.

President Sirleaf’s concern is on reaction to incumbent President, Yaya Jammeh’s call for re-run of the just ended elections in the Republic of Gambia.

The ECOWAS Chairperson said: “The reversal position by President Jammeh after initially accepting the elections results is unacceptable”.

She described President Jammeh’s action as a threat to peace in the Gambia and the West Africa sub- region.

According to a release issued Saturday, December 10, 2016, by the office of President Sirleaf, “ECOWAS will ensure that the will of Gambians is freely expressed in exercising their franchise and must be respected by all without precondition.”

The Gambia held their presidential elections recently in which    opposition candidate, Adama Barrow, defeated incumbent President Jammeh.

President Jammeh earlier called Mr. Barrow to congratulate him for his Victory and conceded defeat.

A joint statement has been issued by the African Union, ECOWAS and the United Nations, considering the reversal saying, “it leaves no doubt that the reversal in the position of President Jammeh is totally unacceptable”.
