The Chairperson of ECOWAS, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, is heading a High-Level ECOWAS delegation to the Gambia to hold mediation talks with President Yaya Jammeh.

Gambia President Yaya Jammeh recently made a pronouncement rejecting the December 1, 2016 election results, which declared opposition candidate Adama Barrow winner.

The President of Liberia, Sirleaf issued a special statement urging President Yaya Jammeh to respect the election results, which expressed the will of the Gambian people.

An opposition leader, Adama Barrow, was elected recently in presidential polls, thus defeating the incumbent President, Yaya Jemmah.

The delegation includes Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, President John Mahama of Ghana and Sierra Leonean President, Ernest Bai Koroma.

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for West Africa, Mohammed Ibn Chambas is also part of the delegation.
