MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Finance and Development Planning Minister, Boima Kamara, has described government’s Agriculture Transformation Agenda as paramount to its National Economic Diversification Plan.

Minister Kamara said the Plan is intended to sustain the economy, amid the global economic slowdown.

He said prioritizing agriculture will create sustainable jobs, export opportunities, attract more foreign exchange and further stabilize prices of goods and services.

Finance and Development Planning Ministry Boss made the statement today when he addressed the regular Information Ministry’s press briefing in Monrovia.

According to Minister Kamara, reliability of the extractive industry is no more guaranteed, because it is the international market that is now determining their sustainability.

He mentioned the reduction of ships docking at the Free Port of Monrovia as one of the signs that the current global economic slowdown is affecting Liberia’s economy.

The Finance Ministry Boss also noted that initially, there were 119 vessels docking at the port, but only 99 are currently docking there. He then called on partners and the Liberian people to support the   government’s Transformation Agenda.

In a related development, Minister Boima said that the Government of Liberia has increased budgetary allocations to anti-graft institutions, including NEC to ensure smooth political transition in 2017.

He noted that the 2016/17 budget also focuses on improving human capacity, security, health, education and the rule of law, and insisted that slower economic recovery caused by Ebola has affected government’s ability to generate revenue, and that government has instituted austerity measures to conform to the revenue collected by the economy.
